Summary:
The latest UNAIDS report outlines historic gains in ending HIV.  This report provides both a global and local perspective of the progress made toward the elimination of HIV. Direct implications for Grassroot Soccer are listed below.

Implications:
Prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa for young men and women aged 15-24 has dropped 35%. (Skillz Core & Generation Skillz)

There have been significant increases in the percentage of adults who had taken an HIV test in the previous 12 months and received their results. (VCT)

ART’s reached 8 million people by the end of 2011, a twenty-fold increase since 2003. (VCT & Bridging the Gap)

These are great strides of progress, but our work is still cut out for us as more than 90% of children who acquire HIV in 2011 live in Sub-Saharan Africa.  At the end of 2011 only half the people living with HIV know their status (VCT, Skillz Plus), women in sub-Saharan Africa remain disproportionally impacted by the HIV epidemic accounting for 58% of all people living with HIV in the region (Skillz Street), and there is a 44% treatment gap between those eligible for and those receiving ART’s. (Bridging the Gap)
