Finding Hope Amid Crisis Through the Power of SKILLZ

October 10, 2025

Today is World Mental Health Day – an annual day recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. World Mental Health Day 2025 is focused on the urgent need to support the mental health and psychosocial needs of people affected by humanitarian emergencies.

In Mozambique, Grassroot Soccer is partnering with Girl Child Rights (GCR) to support girls in communities and schools affected by conflict and disasters in Cabo Delgado province. Many of these girls have experienced profound trauma. Some have been displaced multiple times, experienced or witnessed violence (including abductions, the killing of family and community members, and gender-based violence (GBV)), or are hosting displaced peers while living through crises themselves.

Through the SKILLZ program, Grassroot Soccer and GCR are equipping girls with vital mental health support, coping skills, and confidence, while creating safe spaces for protection, play, and joy in the midst of instability and loss.

Rosa, Sandra, and Mónica are three of those girls. All three were forced to flee their homes and communities following terrorist attacks. During a time of profound trauma, fear, and isolation, SKILLZ helped Rosa, Sandra, and Mónica focus on their mental health and develop a renewed sense of hope, self worth, and resiliency.

[SKILLZ] restored my self-esteem, showing me that even as a refugee, I am no less than anyone else. I know that, despite the losses and the pain, I am a winner.

Sandra

It was during SKILLZ sessions that I rediscovered the strength I thought I'd lost. Today, I can say that, despite all the wounds of the past, I've become stronger.

Rosa

When I participated in the SKILLZ program, it changed me a lot, because I didn't know what my rights were as a girl. Thanks to SKILLZ, I can say that I'm important in society and have the right to make healthy choices. One of the things I love most about SKILLZ is the dancing and games, because they make me forget everything I've been through.
